New Balance Fresh Foam X 1080v14: The Plush Daily Trainer That Converts Skeptics

I'll be honest — five years ago, when someone came into The Brick looking for running shoes, New Balance wasn't the first brand I reached for. They made great lifestyle shoes, sure. But in the performance running world, they were kind of an afterthought. That has completely changed. The Fresh Foam X 1080v14 is one of the best daily trainers on our wall, and I'm fitting more runners in New Balance than ever before.

What Changed

New Balance invested heavily in their Fresh Foam X midsole technology, and it shows. The 1080v14 uses a completely revamped foam compound that's lighter, softer, and more responsive than anything they've made before. It competes directly with the HOKA Clifton and Brooks Glycerin — shoes that have owned the premium cushioned trainer space for years. And in many fittings at The Brick, the 1080 wins.

The Fit Story

Here's where New Balance has always had a secret advantage: width options. The 1080v14 comes in standard, wide, and extra-wide. For runners with broader feet who've been cramming into narrow shoes from other brands, this is a game-changer. The Hypoknit upper is stretchy and breathable, the heel counter is plush without being bulky, and the tongue is gusseted so it doesn't slide around during runs.

During fittings, I notice runners immediately relax when they try on the 1080. There's no pinching, no pressure points — it just wraps around your foot and lets you go.

Who It's For

  • Wide-footed runners who've struggled with other brands' narrow toe boxes
  • High-mileage runners who want premium cushioning for long runs and recovery days
  • Heavier runners who need a shoe that can handle the impact without bottoming out
  • Anyone who values comfort above all else in a daily trainer

How It Stacks Up

vs. HOKA Clifton 10: Very similar shoes. The Clifton has the HOKA rocker; the 1080 has a more traditional ride. The 1080 wins on width options.

vs. Brooks Glycerin 21: Both are premium cushioned shoes. The Glycerin is slightly firmer and more responsive; the 1080 is plusher. Pick your preference.

vs. ASICS Gel-Nimbus 26: The Nimbus is ASICS' max-cushion neutral shoe. The 1080 is lighter and has better energy return. Both are excellent.

Don't Sleep on New Balance

The 1080v14 retails for $165 — competitive with every other premium trainer on the market. If you haven't tried New Balance for running in a while (or ever), come see us at The Brick. I think you'll be surprised. We have the full size run including wides, and we'll make sure you walk out in the right shoe for your foot — whether that's a New Balance or not. That's always been our promise.
